About Us
| Tommy Coxe who had long been a member of the Hartsville Family YMCA conceived the idea of a YMCA in Darlington. Tommy's vision for a YMCA in his hometown sparked an interest in many other Darlingtonians and was enthusiastically supported by then Darlington mayor Ronnie Ward and the director of the Darlington Downtown Development Association, Tony DiLeo.
Phase I of the Darlington Family YMCA opened in 2003 with a fitness center, group exercise studio, locker rooms, nursery, and an outdoor basketball court. Phase II that included a gymnasium, outdoor pool with splash pad, and youth locker rooms opened in the summer of 2008.
Shortly after the opening of the Darlington branch, the YMCA of the Upper Pee Dee was created as an umbrella organization to oversee the individual branches. The YMCA of the Upper Pee Dee's service area includes the four counties of Darlington, Chesterfield, Marlboro, and Lee. |
