As we strive to stay true to our mission “to put Christian principles into practice through programs that build a healthy spirit, mind, and body for all,” we have identified a need to change the offerings in our vending machines—for all our members, but especially for our children.
The unhealthiest soft drinks have high concentrations of calories, caffeine, and high fructose corn syrup. Those will be replaced with healthier alternatives including water, fruit juice (at least 50% juice), green tea, diet soda and limited amounts of sports drinks. The unhealthiest snacks have high amounts of fat, saturated fat, trans-fat, calories, and unrefined sugars. Those will be replaced with healthier snacks like low-fat and baked chips, pretzels, crackers, granola bars, nuts, trail mix, cereal bars, and other low-fat baked goods.
We are making these changes to encourage better nutrition and good health for all our members. We hope it especially has a positive effect on our children. The YMCA—we build strong kids, strong families, strong communities.
